Academy of Medical Psychology education center is a place where the Academy provides written examination in the sequence for Board Certification in Medical Psychology (ABMP Diplomate Process), provides free CEs for our AMP members and our Diplomates in the Specialty, and where other psychologists, physician, nurse practitioners, social workers, and counselors can get CE training. 

A Medical Psychologist is a licensed doctor of psychology with post doctoral training in the biosciences and psychopharmacology, combined with advanced specialty skills applying clinical psychology training and skills, post graduate bioscience and psychopharmacology training and skills, and integration of these trainings and skill sets in the national Medical Facilities or in support of these facilities in the diagnosis and clinical and pharmacological and behavioral and lifestyle treatments of emotional disorders and medical diseases.  The specialist in Medical Psychology completes coursework or didactics, a written and oral examination, a residency or preceptorship prior to becoming a board certified Medical Psychologist.  A medical psychologist is different that a psychopharmacologist who is a licensed psychologist who has biomedical and pharmacology expertise.

    Available courses

    This examination is for those who have completed all post doctorate training in Medical Psychology including academic training, preceptorship, and who have passed credentials review and have passed to "Candidacy Status".  Once Candidacy Status has been achieved and payment of examination fee has been achieved the Candidate may apply for a password to take this 100 item national examination in Medical Psychology.

    Candidates will have one hour and 30 minutes to complete the 100 written questions.  Candidates must pass this examination at 75% correct or more in order to progress to the required Oral Examination Phase of board certification in Medical Psychology (Skype examination administered orally by a panel of specialists using a pool of essay questions from which to pull randomly).

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    This course Examines the motivation behind violent crimes from a Focus Theory perspective. Describes two major types of violent crime with very different motivation and goals. Shows that workplace violence, domestic violence, political assassination, school related violence, and terrorist activities, are all similarly related. Five stages of violence are examined, several landmark cases are presented, along with the essentials of a case work-up from a Focus theory/risk factor perspective, and an example case report. Both experienced clinicians and those new to the field will find considerable useful information in regard to dealing with perpetrators of non-object focused violence.

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    This course looks at diagnostic and treatment of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Relevant research is reviewed along with signs and symptoms, prevalence, characteristics, subtypes, comorbidity, and treatment options. This treatment-focused course will help you learn the skills to successfully work with, and manage, the NPD patient.

    The course covers a broad range of drug classifications commonly used to treat disorders typically encountered in clinical practice. This course is not designed or implied to allow anyone to prescribe psychotropic medications. It is designed to provide a basic introduction to pharmacotherapeutics.

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    This course is designed to introduce clinical psychologists to basic neuropsychological evaluation. It provides participants with a substantive understanding what constitutes a neuropsychological workup. Students will learn how to identify important neuropsychological disorders and how to evaluate dysfunction. Topics include: performing a competent neuropsychological logical workup, basic description and components of typical common disorders, description and selection of tests, and report writing. This course is an introduction to what neuropsychology is but it is not intended to convey or imply certification as a neuropsychologist.

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    This course is about the broken family court system that has become so dominant in deciding custody arrangements. The readings are transcriptions of a conference that was sponsored by the Cummings Foundation. The issues covered range from the failings of the system to how custody arrangements have been sabotaged by ideology to both broad and specific solutions to fixing a system that is in dire need of repair. The role of assessment and treatment are presented.
